Certifications & Standards

  • ANSI/BIFMA X5.1, X5.4, X5.9: An item has been tested by an ISO 17025 accredited lab that includes the applicable ANSI/BIFMA standards in its scope of accreditation. BIFMA conformance ensures an item meets the furniture industry standard for safety, durability, and performance in a commercial environment.
  • BIFMA Level® 1, 2, 3: The Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA)’s LEVEL program evaluates the environmental and social impacts of furniture products, taking into account a company’s social actions, energy usage, material selection and human and ecosystem health impacts. The program offers three tiers: LEVEL 1, 2 and 3. A higher number indicates better performance.
  • CertiPUR-US® Foam: Foam is certified to be low in volatile organic compounds, made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and heavy metals. It is also screened for relevant chemicals, including fire retardants, classified as carcinogens, mutagens or reproductive toxins.
  • CertiPUR® Foam: Foam is certified to be low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), made without heavy metals, dyes that are carcinogenic or allergenic as defined by EU legislation, phthalate plasticizers or substances that may cause heritable genetic damage.
  • Clean Air GOLD: Item is independently tested and certified to low volatile organic compound (VOC) standards that are recognized by sustainability initiatives like LEED, WELL and BIFMA e3. GOLD certification conforms to ANSI/BIFMA e3 standard credits 7.6.1, 7.6.2 +/- credit 7.6.3 or conformance to California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method v1.2 01350 (2017).
  • Cradle to Cradle BRONZE™: The Cradle to Cradle certified products program by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) is a rigorous third-party test that ensures a high standard of transparency and accountability for environmental and social performance.
  • Fair Trade Enterprise: An item is sourced from a verified Fair Trade Enterprise, which meets the World Fair Trade Organization’s environmental and social standards. This includes an assessment of the whole enterprise’s structure and business model, operations and supply chain.
  • FSC® Certified Teak: Carl Hansen & Søn sources teak certified by the Forest Stewardship Council®, which is an international, nonprofit, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests.
  • GOLS Organic Latex: The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic latex, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent third-party certification of the entire textile supply chain. To be certified, a product must contain a minimum of 95% organic raw latex and adhere to GOLS limits on harmful chemicals, fillers and emissions.
  • GOTS Organic Cotton: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent third-party certification of the entire textile supply chain. To be certified, a product must contain a minimum of 95% organic cotton without the use of synthetic pesticides and herbicides.
  • GOTS Organic Wool: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent third-party certification of the entire textile supply chain. To be certified, a product must contain a minimum of 95% organic wool without the use of synthetic pesticides and herbicides.
  • GREENGUARD Gold®: UL Solutions GREENGUARD Certification is the leading testing program for products built to contribute to cleaner, healthier indoor air. GREENGUARD Gold Certified products are screened for more than 15,000 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) known to pollute indoor air.

  • No Flame Retardant Chemicals: An item meets applicable flammability standards, such as CA TB 117, 16 CFR 1632 or 16 CFR 1633, without the use of added flame retardant chemicals.
